Friday 17 July 2015

Natasha Mitchel, Radie National, Canberra, interviewed Hal Kendig, Professor of Ageing and Public Policy, ANU, about retirement. Mitchell mentions Kendig recently co-authored a report entitled Building Age Friendly Communities. Kendig says how people age depends a lot on the environments in which people live and says an age-friendly environment is a process, noting it's built from what people want. He talks about the age-friendly development of Manchester, UK and says it's important to have a range of choices in a local environment. Kendig says there's leadership in the sector by COTA and says there needs to be collective action to prompt change. He says a state ageing plan was developed in NSW several years ago, but it didn't get very farm because of portfolio conflicts between planning, housing and local property interests.
